NYUB Featured in Spin Magazine

2nd largest music magazine in the US features NYUB as an October 'Spin Essential'. I've received a few e-mails now from listeners telling me that the show's in there. Particular thanks to Jess who spotted it first. The latest issue isn't available yet in London but once it arrives you can bet I'll be posting a copy of it online! Needless to say I'm pretty damn bloody excited about this.

Clear Channel to Promote Unsigned Acts

...what on earth next? A weekly electro show across all US stations? Perhaps a gothic-disco show on a Sunday night? Who would have though aye? They're starting to feel the heat.

Wall Street Journal 13/9/2005---------

Clear Channel Communications Inc. is launching a program that will use its radio stations' Web sites to highlight the work of little-known and unsigned musicians across a variety of genres.

DJs will talk up the programming on air, directing listeners to a local Clear Channel radio Web site to hear it. Some stations also may play the music on air.

In recent years, radio has come under fire for tightening playlists and too much repetition. But Evan Harrison, head of Clear Channel's Online Music and Radio unit, says the move is less a response to criticism than it is an expression of a personal goal of his: to spread the word about new music. "I decided I needed to do something with developing artists, both for the music community and our listeners," says Mr. Harrison, who spent several years early in his career promoting artists at record label BMG.

The program, called New!, will offer on-demand music from more than 80 artists every three months. About 16 artists with record deals will get plum positions online, including an artist-produced home video, five streaming tracks, and a link to their own Web site. An additional 20 or so artists with record deals each will get one track.

About 50 unsigned artists from the Web site GarageBand.com each will get five streaming tracks and a link to the GarageBand.com site for more information. GarageBand helps promote new music by letting musicians submit material to the site for review by other musicians and the site's members.

Bollocks to Poverty

tony_blair_la.jpgYou may have noticed the 'Bollocks to Poverty' logo on the left hand side of NYUB. This worthy live music oriented campaign is being organised by ActionAid Space in the UK and they are primarily focusing on 2 areas - HIV & AIDS and Food Rights. They've organised a cutting edge grass-roots campaign exemplified by a stunning set of graphics showing punked up world leaders. Please check these out, you won't be disappointed. And whilst you're there, show them some support!

Many thanks to Helen at Action Aid for putting the campaign posters online.

Alrightee....Erica and I just got back from our Morocco vacation and I'm faced with 120 e-mails. Luckily I recorded a show before I left so you lucky things will be getting NYUB #22 very shortly. In the meantime, you're welcome to view some photos from Morocco. The place is stunning. I can't recommend it enough. Note the 'Jimmi Hendrix Castle' in Essouira. Thanks to everyone for the positive mails - I'll be getting in touch with you all very soon and hopefully later this month I'll be able to reveal some very exciting NYUB publicity in the press.

The Problem with Music by Steve Albini

101420-164326-thumbnail.jpg
The man knows...
I read Steve Albini's original Baffler article many years ago and I recently stumbled upon it again. It's a detailed piece on how easy it is for an up and coming band to actually owe a record company money, AFTER a successful first album.

Major Labels: Who owns Who

101420-164323-thumbnail.jpgYou think you've found a small label and you love the music they sell. But is it really such a 'small' label? Are they actually attached to a much larger entity that's part of a broader 'payola' scheme?

Cutting edge electro from Molvania

Soon to be signed to MoS Records...
Music has a tendency to take itself too seriously sometimes and none more so than the electro scene. Trust Vlad! to produce the ultimate electro-piss take: Elektronik, Supersonik. Thanks to Chris from the erroplains for spotting this.

Online videos for recently featured NYUB artists - Part 1

101420-166033-thumbnail.jpgIf you spend a lot of time trawling the web for streaming music videos then stop. I've just found the perfect blog - Cliptip. There's roughly 150+ links to music videos and GOOD ones at that. We're talking the Dandy Warhols, Vitalic and Dungen here, not your average Top 40 MTV video.

Recently features artists on NYUB that have videos online:

Enjoy!

The Handydandy - Cellular Rockers

101420-163955-thumbnail.jpg
Cellular Zeppelin?
This 5 piece act from Austria have created what they believe is the first band using an integrated network to perform live music, using their cellphones. It appears the phones are connected to a hub using bluetooth and then tones are manipulated using the actual phone controls. You can download MP3s from their site. Watch for a Nokia sponsored European tour. ;)

Goodbye Bloglines, Hello start.com

I spend a hefty amount of my time sifting through RSS feeds to find out what the hell is going on in the music world and I always have friends asking me how the hell I have the time? I recently dumped bloglines and moved to start.com. You add in your RSS feeds and create a custom 'desktop' within your browser. You can import your RSS OPML files now and search both the web and WITHIN your incoming feeds. Subscribing to new feeds is also very easy.

Give start.com a go.
