Don't change that dial
A crazy week at work and more craziness to come next week in San Francisco and Seattle BUT some good stuff coming your way if you're a listener. An interview with a major artist? A former member of a very hot british indie act show-casing his new material or another special NYUB genre show with a remote control DJ? Perhaps an NYUB show co-hosted by one of the UK's top music bloggers? Or could the first installment of NYUB TV be not far off now? Don't change that dial......
NYUB has left the building...
I'm travelling to Paris, New York, Seattle and San Francisco over the next 2 weeks so don't expect to see any shows posted until I get back.

NYUB Vidcast #1
![]()
The Errorplains - Girls in Boys ClothesAs promised - NYUB will now include regular vidcasts, designed especially for iTunes 6.0 (so upgrade if you haven't got it!). The errorplains are our inaugural guests so give them a warm welcome. I'm a strong believer that unsigned artists shouldn't be put off by the concept of making a video. There was no budget for the errorplains video yet they did a cracking job by filming it all in one day and then spending a few weeks developing the graphics themselves. From now on I'll be on the constant lookout for free and legal music videos (unsigned and signed bands) so if you spot anything, let me know. These will be used to create what will hopefully be a monthly video show. Fingers crossed.
Enjoy the video. If you subscribe to NYUB in iTunes 6.0 then you'll see the video appear shortly.
If you don't have an iPod or you don't want to use iTunes 6.0 then you can download the video from the errorplains site.
8-Bit Nerd Music Heaven

try ripping mp3s with this baby.....Wired just ran an article on a guy called '386 DX' (spot the the Intel reference) in Russia who's a leader in '8-bit style' , 'vintage techno' or 'cyberpunk rock'. He's got his midi keyboard connected to a 386 with a 40gb hard drive and 8MB ram. The vocals are delivered via a crusty text-to- speech application which probably maxes out the CPU. Genius.
Download the superb 8-bit cover of Metallica's 'Enter Sandman'

Videocasting, NYUB and a brave new world....
Apple announced the new video capable iPod tonight which will allow users to play Quicktime and MPG4 movies. iTunes 6.0 will also support Quicktime movie integration. Most importantly, it supports RSS feeds with video files attached - videocasts.
I've been thinking about this for a while now. Wouldn't it be great to add a monthly vidcast to NYUB. Record myself and a few friends on a couch, record a few punters outside gigs in London, add in some music videos that are free and legally available on the web...aaah...there you go, that's the clincher. There aren't any available....or are there?
STAY TUNED......

Cool musicians who blog
Beatnik pad has a list of musicians who blog. Bob Mould's on there but he never replied to my e-mail about doing a 'bobcast' so harumph to him. Moby's on there so ignore him. :) I'm going to build on this list as it has a lot of artists missing.
First to be added to the list:
NYUB Album Graphics - A clarification.....
After my phone interview with Chris Ritke at 49media it became apparent to me that irony is not always a strong humor trait in the US. :) So just to clarify - the album covers that I load as graphics that appear on your iPods are simply the WORST album covers I can find on the web. It ties in subtly with the 'mainstream radio is shit....' theme that NYUB was founded upon.
Interviewed by Chris Ritke from 49Media
I had the pleasure of being interviewed by Chris Ritke from the excellent 49media site. We chatted about the podcasting world, musical inspiration, shtity mainstream radio stations and the imminent arrival of videocasting.

Music Genome Project releases Pandora
The music genome project is an attempt to create the most comprehensive analysis of music, ever.
It "sets out to capture the essence of music at the most fundamental level. We ended up assembling literally hundreds of musical attributes or "genes" into a very large Music Genome. Taken together these genes capture the unique and magical musical identity of a song - everything from melody, harmony and rhythm, to instrumentation, orchestration, arrangement, lyrics, and of course the rich world of singing and vocal harmony. It's not about what a band looks like, or what genre they supposedly belong to, or about who buys their records - it's about what each individual song sounds like."
So I decided to give Pandora a go. You enter in a band name and it consequently creates a 'station' around this band and plays you a stream of similar styled songs. I decided to to throw Pandora a 'curve-ball' so I entered in 'Aphex Twin'. This is what happened:
- Broken Spindles - To Die, For Death (Interesting recommendation. The track wasn't very electronic at all but apparently the band has released electronic tracks in the past.
- The Dirty Projectors - Finches' Song at Oceanic Parking Lot (Excellent fit. Ambient experimental track with eerie Antony Jonston style vocals)
- M83 - Until the Night is Over (excellent fit)
- Moby - Alone (Not convinced. Admittedly a pre-'play' track so less dancey but not really pure ambient and electronic)
- Kiyo - Sunset Vibe (excellent fit)
- LFO - Brown (excellent fit)
- Neotropic - Train to Katoomba (excellent fit)
- High Contrast - Love sick (Drum 'n Bass style grooves but not too fast. Excellent recommendation considering that Aphex Twin released the 1999 Richard D. James album consisting of mainly experimental Drum 'n Bass)
- Deadly Avenger - We Took Pelham (excellent fit)
- Autechre - Silver Side (excellent fit)
Give it a go and see what you think. I think it has huge potential and there's a feedback system in place so that you can get it to 'correct' it's submissions to you. I'm going to keep playing with it a bit more to see whether it's working from a US-centric music pool or a large international one. I was very impressed with the 'Aphex Twin station' it generated for me. Quality electronic tracks from some very obscure international artists.
NYUB #24 - Australian Music Special
- Wolfmother - Woman
- The Presets - Let's Go!
- Fiore - Leaving Step
- Expatriate - Get out, Get in
- Decoder Ring - Shining Path
- TZU - The Horse You Rode On
- Gnemesis - I can't dance
