1 Minute Song Competition! (aka Some Labels Just DON'T GET IT)

..doesn't get it
For the last 3 weeks I've been happily mailing signed bands to see whether I can play their material on NYUB. The vast majority of their labels are very eager to co-operate. They understand 'media fragmentation' and where it's all heading. Then occasionally you stumble upon a dinosaur. I had a few emails from people who recommended that I get in touch with a group called 'Giant Drag'. I couldn't find any decent downloadable material on their site nevertheless, I persevered and fired off an e-mail to what seemed to be a generic small label sales address.

A few days later I got an e-mail back from a marketing assistant at Polydor records who stated that it was company policy not to release any MP3s into the public domain. I could have a 1 minute sample of a Giant Drag track to play but that's all. Whoopdee fucking do. But wait, does this mean I can play anything I want for 1 minute? Perhaps it does. So where does this leave the mash-up people who are getting their asses dragged through the court? The big labels just don't get it.

But not luckily not every label I deal with is a bunch of twats. Take Leslie Gilotti for instance at gilotti.net. Strictly speaking, she's not running a label, instead her company assists independent labels in formulating an online marketing and PR strategy, one that increasingly relies on podcasts as a vehicle. Last week I saw the Presets play support for Wolfmother here in London. I loved their stuff so I emailed Leslie asking her who I should talk to about getting one of their tracks on NYUB. By chance she had an existing relationship with Modular records (their label) and I promptly got permission to play the track.

So, I get to play a track I love, thousands of people out there get to hear it too and the presets will see a few extra CDs sold. Everybody happy right?

Not the people at Polydor it seems. So in honour of Polydor, I'm going to start a little competition. Send me your favourite 1 minute tracks. Email me directly or leave a comment below. The winner gets to introduce it on the show!
