Your Right to Digital Freedom

One of my newest pet hobbies is digital activism. The Guardian's Danny O'Brien has neatly summed up my beliefs in this area. There is far too much at stake for you to ignore what's going on, particularly if you live in the UK and the EU like I do. Sign up to Danny's pledge to lay the foundation for a European equivalent of the EFF, an organisation that defends freedom in the digital world.

Jean Charles de Menezes

jean-charles-small.jpgI've just found out that Finn, an NYUB listener, was an acquintance of Jean Charles De Menezes who was tragically mistaken for a terrorist bomber by the police and shot dead. Finn has written about it on his blog "Speaker's Corner".

errorplains 'Girls in Boys Clothes' Launch Party - The Pictures

An excellent time was had by all. A shit-load of noise was made and the the crowd was in awe. We even experienced a very rock 'n and roll moment where the landowner of the 'Ten Bell's threatened to boot us all out for excessive noise. Naturally he was told to fuck off. Babyshambles Shambles Continue...

Just say no.....
Just say no.....
Live 8 was last weekend and AOL have put all the footage online. I didn't really watch any of it (not many artists appealed) but I did kick myself for missing John Elton and Pete Doherty (Libertines, Babyshambles) perform T-Rex's "Children of the Revolution" in London. On cue, the drug addled Doherty turns up and makes a mockery of the song, with Elton barely managing to keep it all together. Babyshambles were also supposed to support Oasis on Saturday but they were dropped from the billing last week due to a non-show for an Oasis concert earlier in the week.

The Errorplains Launch 'Girls in Boys Clothes'

error_picture_cropped_big.jpg
The errorplains, currently one of the most left-field electro outfits in London have officially launched their new single 'Girls in Boys Clothes'. Described as "The Cramps doing a rave" and "electro death-pop tuned to the key of gabba", the new single will be available via www.tunetribe.com on July 11th.

'Girls in boys’ clothes’ is the first record the band has released as ‘The Errorplains’. The band’s last single ‘Fever’, released under the pseudonym ‘The Messiah Complex’, was played on MTV2 and by Zane Lowe on BBC Radio 1 and selected by Bethan Eflyn (Radio1) as her choice in oneClick’s 12 best records of 2004

NYUB interviewed Chris Etches, the mastermind behind the errorplains.

NYUB: How did the errorplains form?

Etches: The errorplains originally formed from the dregs of Cardiff's noise punk scene.  ChrisJ had been kicked out of 'Shooting at Unarmed Men' (Mclusky side project) and I had just been kicked out of 'The Martini Henry Rifles', so we thought that if no other bastard will have us in their band, we'd better form one of our own.  And me and Johnny Luu had been making computer games and shit together for a few years, and he started to help us out with any visual stuff we needed, and then that evolved into him being a full time member.

NYUB: What's your inspiration?

Etches: Well musically it varies, but then, oddly, I don't think personal musical influences are what has shaped the band's sound.  I mean of course we all like electro and rock and roll stuff, but the songs are more often based on ideas like 'what's the fastest, loudest drum beat we can sequence and still have people listen' or 'do you reckon we could do a two-step garage death thrash metal track?'.

NYUB: Which mainstream artist/group do you hate the most?

Etches: Well, this is just me personally of course, but 'The Bravery'. They claim to be this electro-rock and roll act, but they were put together via audition.  And they claim to like clubbing, which means their A&R guy took them to some shit club in New York and cut them a few lines of coke in the bog.  I personally invite them out for an evening's ravin' with the errorplains, if they are still standing at the end, then I will cease with the hating.
[NYUB vouches for the shit NYC clubs]

NYUB: Any further plans for 2006?

Etches: Get famous, be able to pay the rent with music, and telling EMI and every other major to get fucked.

A Letter to Al-Qaeda

Love Music Hate Facism2.jpgLifted from the London Daily News - July 7, 2005
------------------------------------------------------------

What the fuck do you think you're doing?

This is London. We've dealt with your sort before. You don't try and pull this on us.

Do you have any idea how many times our city has been attacked? Whatever you're trying to do, it's not going to work. All you've done is end some of our lives, and ruin some more. How is that going to help you? You don't get rewarded for this kind of crap.

If this is a message to Tony Blair, we've got news for you. We don't much like our government ourselves, or what they do in our name. But, listen very clearly. We'll deal with that ourselves. We're London, and we've got our own way of doing things, and it doesn't involve tossing bombs around where innocent people are going about their lives.

That's because we're better than you. Everyone is better than you. Our city works. We rather like it and we're going to go about our lives as normal. We're going to take care of the lives you ruined. And we're going to go to work. And we're going down to the pub.

So you can pack up your bombs, put them in your arseholes, and get the fuck out of our city.

Glastonbury 2005

You lucky, lucky, lucky little bastards who got tickets this year. Despite the flooding on Friday, it seems it was another cracker of a year for the world's premier outdoor music festival. I had the privilege of attending in 2002 and 2003 and I just can't recommend this festival enough. It's not often you get the chance to rub shoulders with Interpol's Paul Banks in the dance tent or experience the utter chaos that is 150,000 people in a field, intent on simply getting BENT.  See you all there in 2007!
