New iTunes Podcasting Features?

101420-96247-thumbnail.jpgRecent analyst comments are speculating that Apple is using iMixes technology to implement the Podcast feature in the next version of iTunes. With this feature iTunes users would be able to set up a “playlist” of regularly listened to podcast and have a system of voting on it just like music. An example would be “Technology News Daily” that would consist of several podcasts.

A user would be able to subscribe to the Podcast iMix to receive all the feeds in that person’s podcast playlist. Ultimately increasing the number of podcast subscriptions through iTunes.

The name of this feature remains to be unknown but several rumors suggest “iCasts” or “iFeeds.” Apple’s iTunes has sold 850 million songs since it opened in 2003.

Playlouder.com mentions NYUB

fuzzyheadblack.gifPlaylouder.com has an article on the commercialisation of myspace.com and it's imminent move into the UK market via a joint venture with CD:UK. NYUB is mentioned as an alternative, less commercial option to exploring new music, as part of the broader indie music podcasting scene.

Top Selling Albums of the 80's and 90's

Garth Brooks and an unfortunate fan..
In Sydney, I stumbled upon a book containing a list of the top selling albums for the last two decades. Here's how it looks:

1980-1990

  1. Thriller - Michael Jackson (29.3m) [US]
  2. Back in Black - AC/DC (19.1m) [AUS]
  3. Born in the USA - Bruce Springsteen (15.9m) [US]
  4. Appetite for Destruction - Guns and Roses (15.6m) [US]
  5. Whitney Houston - Whitney Houston (14.2m) [US]
  6. No Jacket  Required - Phil Collins (13.8m) [UK]
  7. Purple Rain - Prince (13.6m) [US]
  8. Live / 75-85 - Bruce Springsteen (13.1m) [US]
  9. Brothers in Arms - Dire Straits (12.9m)  [UK]
  10. Hysteria - Def Leppard (12.6m) [UK]

1990-2000

  1. Come on Over - Shania Twain (22m) [US]
  2. The Bodyguard - Whitney Houston (19m) [US]
  3. Jagged Little Pill - Alanis Morissette (19m) [US]
  4. Cracked Rear View  - Hoote & The Blowfish (16m) [US]
  5. No Fences - Garth Brooks (16m) [US]
  6. Double Live - Garth Brooks (15m) [US]
  7. Supernatural - Santana (14.6m [US]
  8. Backstreet Boys - Backstreet Boys (13.2m) [US]
  9. Ropin' the Wind - Garth Brooks  (12.8m) [US]
  10. Britney Spears - Baby One More Time (11.3m) [US]

Whatever happened to good taste in the 90's. I'll happily confess to owning half of the top ten in the 1980's but the 90's list is a pile of rubbish.

Jason at Insomnia Radio recently checked the Top 10 albums of 2005 and it's not looking any better.

Sleepless in Singapore

I'm currently hanging out at Changi Airport in Singapore waiting for my 10pm flight back to London. NYUB #30 should be ready at the end of January. I've been out of the musical loop for a whole month so it's going to take me a little time to gather material.
