Glastonbury Music Festival & Apple/EMI DRM announcement...
![]()
Wet weather gear optionalHell, it's been a long time since I posted anything. A few people emailed me asking me whether NYUB had croaked it. Far from it! I just haven't had the time. Fear not, a new one will be coming out shortly. In the meantime, I managed to secure some coveted tickets to the Glastonbury music festival this year. I'm hoping to record all the weird and wonderful sounds from the festival and throw them on an NYUB episode in July.
Anybody else out there going? I'd love to catch up with you at the festival.
You've all probably heard about the Apple & EMI announcement. All EMI tracks will be sold without DRM. Apparently it's a move by Apple & EMI to please consumers. Bullshit. It's a move to entrench AAC as the defacto digital standard in the industry. Embracing the MP3 format would have been more symbolic.

The Mother of all 2006 Lists
Largehearted Boy, he who was too much time on his hands, has compiled every single 'year-end music list 2006' he's come across.
Check it out if you're stuck for music.
Me? I'm not going to comment on 2006. I've digested way too much music this year and I've still got heartburn. I did fancy Silversun Pickups but only Spin magazine put them in their list.
My pick for 2007? There's only one ofcourse and that is Axl's imminent meteoric comeback - 'Chinese Democracy'. Apparently it will be released next year.
Oh yes...... ;)
NYUB Nominated for Best Podcast 2006!
Crikey. This serves me right for not checking my mail often enough. It appears that NYUB was nominated for best podcast 2006 as part of the 2006 Weblog Awards. I didn't have a clue so I haven't done a 'get out the vote' campaign and NYUB is trailing badly in votes at the moment. Apparently you can vote once every 24 hours but the deadline is today so get in there!
Pitchfork takes a beating...
Slate investigates the Pitchfork back-lash. I started reading Pitchfork back in 2001 and admittedly, the editorial staff are on a never-ending quest for the more obscure and ecclectic. The moreso, the higher the score regardless of actual talent. If you are passionate about music, then I recommend you keep a good breadth of music mags and blogs at your disposal (common sense, I hear you say!) and don't rely on a few marquee publications. If you want a real Pitchfork anti-dote, visit Drowned In Sound. You can comment on all reviews and the wank factor is low.
Ofcourse, you can always tune into NYUB for your fix. ;)
Below is a video made by Sound Team in response to a shitty Pitchfork review.
Can't get enough of those covers?
I find that if people don't like a show I put out, they'll still like the cover(s) at the end. So, if you can't get enough cover-action then visit Torontoist who have just released a very detailed list of the best covers around.

Peter JennerThe Register interviews Peter Jenner, former manager of the Clash and Pink Floyd and now Billy Bragg's manager. He predicts that current digital rights management structures will be replaced by blanket licensing regimes, within 3 years. Wouldn't that be nice? :)
Offcuts 07 - Fancy yourself as a video artist?

I'm a big fan of DIY digital video, particularly funky viral stuff. I get particularly excited when it involves bands doing DIY digital video (the errorplains for instance) so when Offcuts 07 approached me for a bit of help, I jumped at the chance. Offcuts brings together bands and filmmakers, that are as adventurous about their music videos, as they are about their music. They recently scoured the globe for 6 artists who have the balls to have their tracks visually translated by a global network of indie filmmakers, animators and video artists.
There are two categories:
Cut to size: Work made specifically for the competition, set to one of the six tracks posted by the participating acts (Selfish Cunt (Pictured above), Paloma Faith and the Unfaithfuls, The Pistolas, Saltpeter, Miz Metro and Tetine).
One size fits all:
Existing music video work that is leftfield and fresh.
All entries to be submitted by December 29. The winners will be announced in March and their videos delivered globally via NYUB.
Get in there!
