Alan McGee no longer wants to own a record label...

The man who discovered Oasis and formed the Pop Tones label in 1999 wants out.  He doesn't see the point of owning a label because there's no money to be made since the cost of promoting a band via conventional means is too high. I agree. Big label band promotion often resembles a shotgun being sprayed at a crowd and hoping that something will stick. Viral marketing via social networks is nothing new; just look at the success stories on Myspace. However, complete ownership of large scale promotion & production to by a band themselves hasn't been done yet. I'm not talking about established mega-bands here like U2, but unknown acts, who get a following and then take it to the next level themselves. All bands that get to this stage, end up signing a deal.

Is it possible in the future? I think so but the social networks needs to become a lot larger and the features on these sites that promote viral sharing need to be a lot more efficient. What do I mean with efficiency? Discoverability. Most social networking sites still make it too difficult for you to find new music that you might like.

The internet will become the main distribution channel in 10 years time, therefore lowering the cost of distribution to potentially a negligible amount, another prerequisite.

So what's the secret sauce for 'Band 2.0' ?

1. Launch video on Youtube, Xbox Live (theoretical), Apple TV (theoretical), Joost (theoretical)

2. Work with Last.fm or myspace for gig dates, recommendation engines and fan cultivation

3. Sell album on iTunes (no label)

4. A good tune :)

5. A good stunt

6. Hire friends with business skills.

Anyone else slightly jaded by Last FM? It's great in theory, but I've been listening to some varied stuff (M83, Sigur Ros, Isis, DJ Shadow, Thom Yorke) and what's on top of my Recommended Artists List?

The Beatles!

Well done there.

I'm still very happy with it but I use it more for events listings in London, rather than recommendations.

I'm actually writing my 1st year finals in musicology on the future of music. And how music is going to be distributed, and how big the role of the record labels are going to be. I personally believe that record companies will have a future a few years ahead, yet still, the musicians are going to evolve their role and become more and more, their own label, manager, promoter.
The 6 subjects mentioned, I really believe it's correct!

NAUGHTY MK!!
the golden rule of the music industry is, though must NEVER agree with McGee, he is a complete fuckwit, and the onyl reason he stopped PopTones is that it made no money and he signed a bunch of shite acts. I can co-oberate these facts with insider knowledge which I prepared to tell you over a beer or two soon.

Good work NYUB! I’d go further than merely corroborating the view that listeners will lap up ‘Band 2.0’ innovations. My chosen model to bring edgy-pop smiles to the face of the masses has at its core a no-gig approach, & I firmly believe the ‘good stunt’ recommendation should be taken on a level so that there’s more than simply a one-off zany PR effort. Should I become the first unsigned act to reach #1, I’ll share how it’s done. Promise :-)

About 5 years ago I realised the term 'unsigned' was old hat and bands were going to become 'independent', inde not indie. Luckily I was 5 years into running a site for British Unsigned Rock Bands (BURBs) so I set out to bring in the next revolution in British music. For the next 5 years BURBs tried numerous things to make it happen: Subscription compilation CDs, BURBs Radio plus live shows, BURBs Pod podcasts, Artist of the Month (+archive) so many things aimed at bringing the good music to the people. Jeez, I could go on for ages...Needless to say BURBs shut after 10 years as my hobby coz I got so sick of banging my head on the brick wall trying to make it work. If you can, get Beat Motel 'zine Issue 6, I had a rant in there. Love NYUB btw - must Email you direct..
