Top Selling Albums of the 80's and 90's

Garth Brooks and an unfortunate fan..
In Sydney, I stumbled upon a book containing a list of the top selling albums for the last two decades. Here's how it looks:

1980-1990

  1. Thriller - Michael Jackson (29.3m) [US]
  2. Back in Black - AC/DC (19.1m) [AUS]
  3. Born in the USA - Bruce Springsteen (15.9m) [US]
  4. Appetite for Destruction - Guns and Roses (15.6m) [US]
  5. Whitney Houston - Whitney Houston (14.2m) [US]
  6. No Jacket  Required - Phil Collins (13.8m) [UK]
  7. Purple Rain - Prince (13.6m) [US]
  8. Live / 75-85 - Bruce Springsteen (13.1m) [US]
  9. Brothers in Arms - Dire Straits (12.9m)  [UK]
  10. Hysteria - Def Leppard (12.6m) [UK]

1990-2000

  1. Come on Over - Shania Twain (22m) [US]
  2. The Bodyguard - Whitney Houston (19m) [US]
  3. Jagged Little Pill - Alanis Morissette (19m) [US]
  4. Cracked Rear View  - Hoote & The Blowfish (16m) [US]
  5. No Fences - Garth Brooks (16m) [US]
  6. Double Live - Garth Brooks (15m) [US]
  7. Supernatural - Santana (14.6m [US]
  8. Backstreet Boys - Backstreet Boys (13.2m) [US]
  9. Ropin' the Wind - Garth Brooks  (12.8m) [US]
  10. Britney Spears - Baby One More Time (11.3m) [US]

Whatever happened to good taste in the 90's. I'll happily confess to owning half of the top ten in the 1980's but the 90's list is a pile of rubbish.

Jason at Insomnia Radio recently checked the Top 10 albums of 2005 and it's not looking any better.

had a similar problem a while back where i wanted to split large mp3s (live sets) into parts, while there are quite a number of apps out there that can do it, i found most of them to be bloated or they required you to buy it, so i ended up writing my own little app in ruby to do the job and it works like a charm!

Have you tried TotalRecorder? I believe it can record pretty much anything you want and output it as MP3.

know garageband can do essentially what you're asking, maybe sound studio too. That old school classic app SoundApp was amazing and would probably work as well. I know it does work under classic.

To join songs, try the old DOS command COPY, like this: copy /b song1.mp3 + song2.mp3 + song3.mpg mysongs.mp3. That should work great.

The price goes to Restiffbard. The iTunes Applescript does the job exactly the way I wanted it. Thanks a lot for your suggestions though, they will undoubtedly come in handy at some later point in time.

Replace mp3-*-name.mp3 with the names of your songs (using Terminal, you can just drag and drop the file/names to Terminal and it'll add the name/path). The ">" is the output pipe, and the "joined-songs.mp3" would be the resulting name. You can change this to whatever name you want.

For instance, I typed "cat" in my Terminal, and dragged three files from my iTunes Music folder in to the Terminal window, and followed with the > pipe and specified ~/Desktop ("~/" is Unix shorthand for your "Home folder") and the file went to the Desktop with the name I specified

Jesus Christ, no kidding. I owned Appetite, Thriller, Back in Black, Hysteria, Brothers in Arms...

The blinding difference in quality between the 80's and 90's is...well, I'm speechless. My question is, what happened within the music industry in less than a decade to turn people into country and pop loving sheep?

Wow.. 8 and 2 for me.. I used to think "I'm just getting old.." but when you look at it like you've shown it, it's quite clear that commercial music has pretty much no value left.

Wonder if I'll even have 1 from the 2000-2010 list...

lets look at them in a few seperate battles...

number 2s
Back in Black VS the cocking body gaurd

Appetite vs Hootie and the friggin blow fish

jeeeeezuz christ, what the fuck happened in that decade.... I need to get me a delorian that can clock 88, a body warmer, some luminous Nikes and go back to 1990 and sort that shit out,

Discussing this the other night, How we scoffed at the 80's back in the 90's. But it would seem that once all the posturing and hair was out of the way it turns out the 80's was a more creative decade then the 90's who would of thought eh?
January 30, 2006 | Unregistered Commenterdok
This decade won't be any better. Declining record sales? Perhaps it's the quality? Independent labels don't seem to be suffering.

"Whatever happened to good taste in the 90's" indeed! I was shocked by everyone on the list except Alanis. Where's all the great alternative, rap, metal, and electrnica albums that came out during this era. The 90's rocked! But you'd never know it by looking at that list.
February 24, 2007 | Unregistered CommenterBryan
where's seatle on the list? At least nevermind shoulda cracked the top 20.
March 14, 2007 | Unregistered Commenterspoonman
Well one thing I realized, the 90's were my teen years. The 80's were my single digits and a prep to my teens. In the 80's I listened to mainstream. In the 90's I listened to underground with my main genre being industrial metal and punk. So of course I'd be biased towards 90's music because I loathed the top 40 BS heard on the radio but resided underground with Ministry and Fear Factory. I'll sit here and play "Unskinny Bop" by Poison and "The Kill" by 30 seconds to Mars and to me the winner is Mr. Leto. Well that's not really fair...The Kill was made in the last 2 years.
