I read Steve Albini's original Baffler article many years ago and I recently stumbled upon it again. It's a detailed piece on how easy it is for an up and coming band to actually owe a record company money, AFTER a successful first album.

His "Some of your friends are already this fucked" article is posted on a number of sites across the internet. And for good reason; as negative as it is, I don't think there's actually been a more articulate summation of the current state of the music business written up in a digestible form. 100k and three points for Butch Vig? Buy yourself a G5, ProTools LE, some mics and a couple of blankets for the bathroom - you can get his drum sound in no time. Maybe.
