10 Years of Britpop

liamgallagher.jpgOr should that be, '7 years ago, 3 years of britpop ended'? :)

A few days ago the Guardian mentioned the britpop phenomena and how it supposedly all kicked off in the summer of 1995. Being in New Zealand at the time, I was rather removed from it all until my university radio station, 95bfm, played 'Caught by the Fuzz' by Supergrass. The Britpop era offered almost 3 years of glorious music until it all ended unceremoniously with Oasis releasing 'Be Here Now' - a coke-fuelled disaster of an album that had many critics begging to revise their initial hyperbole. By then britpop had become mired in mainstream appeal. Game over.

I've posted some nifty resources for those who want to know what all the fuss was about, or merely feel nostalgic for the past:

God, how I do hate those Oasis brats. It would be alright if they produced consistently great music, but their songs are not only derivative, but unimaginative. Champagne Supernova?! Come on! If the Beatles had written a song like that they would have given it to Ringo to sing... and it's a highlight in Oasis' career!

True - they're not original but they sure managed to capture hearts over here. I'm not a particularly big Oasis fan but 'Live Forever' is quite a stunning track. Don't get me wrong, I think they're utter thugs, Liam more so than Noel. Not sure if you heard the latest story over here about the hirsute mancunian. Liam, apparently, was a huge fan of Spinal Tap. But he thought they were a real band. He was horrified to discover the same actors performing as A Mighty Wind at Carnegie Hall a few years back and, when Noel told him the bad news, shouted "I'm not 'avin' that", and stormed off. Apparently he's never watched the film again.

I would have to put "Stutter" above "Connection" as the ultimate 'Elastica' Britpop track - but that's just me.
I also never understood Pulp.... But hey - as someone who left the UK six months before Blair was in office, who am I to argue with their sudden rise to fame?
All I remember of Britpop is some rather dodgy stories involving a mate, McDonalds on I-75 outside of Augusta, powder, trips to Atlanta and shouting 'Slide Away' from the balcony on another friends apartment on Peachtree Street outside the Fox Theater. We did see Oasis there - they were rubbish (it was when "Be here Now" came out; Liam spat on the stage a lot, fell over and generally looked crap). Cornershop supported and blew them away. It was just before "When I was born for the 7th time" came out and they were ace. Now THAT reminds me of Brit pop! I can't say I lived in London, but I did get forwarded the music, got the drugs through Jockeys in Augusta and saluted on CSpan when Blair got into No. 10. Oh how times have changed.....
