San Francisco, Birdmonster & The Magic Numbers

BIRDMONSTER_small.jpgI should probably elaborate a bit more on my San Francisco visit. It was the first time I got to spend some decent amount of time in this city and I wasn't disappointed. On the first day there, I received an e-mail from Gregor, an NYUB listener. He noticed that I had played a band called Birdmonster on NYUB#25 and told me that they were playing at Studio Z on Friday night. A few hours later I got an e-mail from Justin, a Birdmonster bandmember notifying me of the gig. We all ended up at some filthy Irish bar and started talking about how music blogs and podcasts are really changing the landscape for unsigned bands. Birdmonster were initially featured by Music for Robots and Gorilla vs Bear and things have snowballed rapidly from there. It's gotten to the point where an A&R rep from Capitol records will be watching them play next month. I wish them all the best as these guys are deserving of big-time recognition. They played a storming set at Studio Z despite some technical difficulties and managed to get a crowd completely revved up that seemed indifferent to the previous acts. Apparently they blew 'Clap Your Hands Say Yeah' and 'The National' off the stage when playing support for these acts earlier in the year. Keep an eye out for the full LP coming out in January and a UK tour sponsored by NYUB. (Ok, ok, I'm bullshitting but who knows...:-))

Then on Thursday night I managed to watch the Magic Numbers at 330 Ritch. For those who don't know this band - they're probably one of the biggest UK indie acts of the year having sold out the Brixton Academy whilst charging 20 pounds a pop. We managed to get in for 5 bucks and that was merely a cover charge to enter a club that was half-full. If you're living in a major US city and you're a big fan of UK music then please, keep an eye out for local UK acts touring near you. You have no idea how lucky you are that you can avoid the 10 minute sell-out windows we're currently seeing here in London for some of these acts.

I keep meaning to get to Popscene to see bands; The Arctic Monkeys are playing on the 17th November at Popscene; I doubt it'll be so quiet for that.. However, I'll be at a conference and won't be able to go :-(
Anyway; nice to hear you thought the Irish bar we went to was filthy - it's cleaner than it used to be (epsecially outside!).
The Bird Monster guys are very cool; they seem to have their heads screwed on and I hope they do well - it was especially interesting to hear that they were being courted by the ex-Brian Jonestown Massacre Manager. They need to watch Dig! before progressing with him any further!
